A two-out walk and one bad pitch proved to be the downfall of Whitey Ford as the 2004 Boston Red Sox defeated the 1961 New York Yankees 2-1.
Bobby Richardson gave New York a 1-0 lead in the second with a RBI double, but that would be all of the offense the Yankees could muster against Boston starter Curt Schilling.
Ford (6-6) dominated the Red Sox lineup early by retiring eight in a row before Schilling became the first base runner in the top of the third as he worked a walk.
The mistake pitch was next as Johnny Damon smacked a two-run homer to produce what turned out to be the final score of the affair.
In going to distance for the Yankees, Ford gave up a pair of hits and walked two with eight strikeouts.
Jason Varitek singled in the fourth for Boston’s other hit, while the last Red Sox player to reach base was when Gabe Kapler walked in the fifth.
Schilling also tossed a complete game as he allowed eight hits and fanned 10.
Bill Stafford (10-2) is scheduled to start for New York in the finale of the four-game series at Yankee Stadium, while Pedro Martinez gets the ball for the Red Sox.
