The 1961 New York Yankees were able to salvage the final contest of their four-game series with the 2004 Boston Red Sox with a 7-0 victory.

The Yankees had struggled offensively as the Red Sox took the first three affairs with several key hits and solid pitching. This game would be different for the Yankees as as they had 10 hits with four homers.

New York built a 3-0 advantage after two innings. Tony Kubek led off the game with a homer against Boston starter Pedro Martinez.

In the second, Yogi Berra and Bill Skowron both smacked solo homers off Martinez.

Elston Howard made it 4-0 in the fifth as his double scored Mickey Mantle from first.

Martinez, who looked dominant at times with 10 strikeouts, left the mound with one out in the seventh as the Yankees would put their final three runs on the scoreboard.

After the Boston hurler whiffed Kubek, Clete Boyer singled to begin the rally. Roger Maris sent Martinez to the showers with a two-run bomb that was his 27th homer of the season.

Alan Embree took over for Martinez and he surrendered a double to Mantle and a RBI single to Howard, who led New York with three hits and was the only Yankee not to strike out during the contest.

Bill Stafford continues to lead the Yankees in victories with an 11-2 record.

Stafford gave up five hits and fanned five in the his third straight complete game. It was also his seventh win in his last eight starts with a no decision effort mixed into that time frame.

New York visits the 1924 Washington Senators for a single contest before the two teams head to Yankee Stadium for a three-game series.

Ralph Terry (4-5) is scheduled to start for the Yankees, while the Senators go with Tom Zachary.
