27 * 61 Replay 72: 27 Yankees at 24 Senators

Editor’s note: The 27 * 61 Yankees Replay games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will not be used for any games. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur.

Bob Meusel appears to like playing in Griffith Stadium.

Earlier this season, he banged out six hits and knocked in six runs as the 1927 New York Yankees beat up the 1924 Washington Senators 16-0.

During this brief visit to Washington for a single contest, Meusel’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth provided the only offense for the Yankees in a 2-0 win over the Senators. Tony Lazzeri singled to lead off the frame prior to the game-winning long ball.

As much as Meusel likes facing the Senators, Urban Shocker (8-0) must feel the same way as he posted his second shutout of the season in Washington. He was also on the mound in the previously mentioned 16-0 blanking of the Senators.

This time, Shocker gave up six hits and didn’t walk a batter with one strikeout as he won his first game after three straight no decisions in starts. He also had two relief appearances during that stretch.

For the Senators, Tom Zachary was equal to Shocker until the ninth. Zachary also allowed six hits, while fanning a pair.

Meusel was the only Yankee with two hits. Earl McNeely had three hits off Shocker and ironically, Zachary had two infield singles.

New York entertains the 1924 Washington Senators in a three-game series. Wilcy Moore (4-2) starts the opener for the Yankees with John Martina getting the ball of the Senators.
