A couple of late rallies allowed the 1961 New York Yankees to pull away from the 1924 Washington Senators for a 6-2 victory.
The Senators took the lead in the bottom of the third as player/manager Bucky Harris hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Washington starter Tom Zachary held off the Yankees until the sixth. Zachary would get just one out in the seventh before getting sent to the showers. He surrendered all six runs on 10 hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts
Mickey Mantle singled with one out in the sixth. Mantle scored from first on a double by Yogi Berra. Bill Showron gave the Yankees a 2-1 advantage with a double that brought home Berra.
The Yankees added four runs with one swing in the seventh to oust Zachary.
New York starting pitcher Ralph Terry got things underway with an infield single. One out later, Clete Boyer walked and Roger Maris singled to load the bases.
It was time for Mantle and the slugger came through as he smashed a long homer for a grand slam. It was his 29th of the season giving him 71 RBI as his batting average went up to .300.
After Terry gave up the run in the third, he allowed a solo homer to Ossie Bluege in the seventh. Terry (5-5) was able to finish the game on the mound scattering nine hits and fanning one.
George Mogridge ended the seventh on the mound for the Senators, while Paul Zahniser tossed the final two frames.
The two squads move to Yankee Stadium as New York entertains the Senators in a three-game series.
