It appeared early in the contest that the 1927 New York Yankees might be in trouble, but in the end it was Babe Ruth who made everything all right.

Ruth’s walk-off homer in the 11th inning gave the Yankees a 5-4 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators.

The Senators got going in the top of the first against New York starter George Pipgras. Sam Rice drove in a run with a single before Washington added an unearned run when Tony Lazzeri misplayed a grounder off the bat of Ossie Bluege to make it 2-0.

Both teams scored in the fourth as Washington starting pitcher Curly Ogden helped his cause with a sacrifice fly. The Yankees picked up a run when Pat Collins reached on an error by Washington first baseman Joe Judge with the bases loaded.

In the seventh, the Senators added another tally as player/manager Bucky Harris blasted a solo homer to make it 4-1.

The Yankees came to life the in the seventh as they were able to tie the affair with three runs.

Lou Gehrig had a RBI ground out that was followed by a two-run single by Lazzeri.

Pipgras worked seven innings for New York before giving way to Myles Thomas in the eighth.

After two frames, New York manager Miller Huggins was forced to call Urban Shocker in from the bullpen.

Shocker (9-0) would finish the the final two innings to pick up the win.

Ogden was replaced by Allen Russell with one out in the ninth as he would stop a New York uprising.

However, it would be Russell who was on the collision course with Ruth and the game-winner in the 11th. For Ruth, it was his 30th homer of the season.

Dutch Ruether (3-7) will start in the finale of the three-game series for the Yankees as Firpo Marberry gets the ball for the Senators.
