There was plenty of power on display for the 1961 New York Yankees as they belted five homers.

However, the 1924 Washington Senators were able to overcome the surge on the way to a 7-6 victory over New York in Yankee Stadium.

Roger Maris had three long balls for the Yankees, while Mickey Mantle and Clete Boyer each added one blast. Maris now has 30 homers this season with Mantle maintaining team lead at 31. It was the seventh of the year for Boyer.

Maris got things underway in the bottom of the first with a solo shot off Washington starter Curly Ogden, but the Senators had a big answer in the second.

After a perfect inning, New York starter Bud Daley struggled in the second as the Senators built a 4-1 advantage.

Goose Goslin reached on an error by New York shortstop Tony Kubek. Joe Judge followed with a double and Ossie Bluege walked to load the bases.

Muddy Ruel knocked in two runs with a single, while Ogden and Earl McNeely added back-to-back RBI singles.

In their half of the second, the Yankees got one of the runs back as Bill Skowron doubled and scored on a single by Bobby Richardson.

The Yankees tied it in the third as Maris and Mantle each hit solo homers and it was 4-4.

Goslin’s homer in the fifth put the Senators on top, but the Yankees responded in the bottom of the frame as Boyer and Maris homers giving New York a 6-5 lead.

In the end, it would be a pair of sacrifice flies by McNeely that would make the difference. He tied it in the sixth and had the game-winner in the eighth off Tex Clevenger.

Daley (5-7) would get charged with the run and the loss as Clevenger entered the game with one out in the eighth. Daley would give up a dozen hits and all seven runs with five strikeouts.

Ogden went seven for the Senators to get the win. He allowed eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Allen Russell earned the save walking batter in his two innings of work.

Jim Coates (5-1) gets a rare start for the Yankees in the finale of the three-game series with the Senators countering with Firpo Marberry.
