Firpo Marberry was able to hold off a powerful lineup as he retired final 15 batters to lead the 1924 Washington Senators to a 3-2 victory over the 1927 New York Yankees.
With the win, the Senators took two contests in the three-game series from New York in Yankee Stadium.
All of the runs were scored by the fourth inning as Marberry and New York starter Dutch Ruether both settled down.
Earl McNeely led off the game for Washington with a single. One out later, Sam Rice singled to move McNeely to third. After Ruether retired Goose Goslin, McNeely raced home when a pitch got away from Yankees catcher Johnny Grabowski.
Although the Senators left the bases loaded in the top of the third, they were able to cash in one inning later.
Roger Peckinpaugh tripled to begin the rally. Two outs later, McNeely doubled to put Washington in front 2-0. A RBI single by Washington player/manager Bucky Harris brought home the final tally for the Senators.
New York picked up both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig both walked before Tony Lazzeri struck out. Bob Meusel added an infield singled and the bases were jammed.
Joe Dugan beat out a relay throw to first as the Senators tried to turn a double play, which allowed Ruth to score. Grabowski added a RBI single at the Yankees trailed by a run.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, the last base runner they would have would come when Earle Combs walked in the fifth.
Marberry gave up six hits and fanned five, while Ruether (3-8) also went the distance surrendering nine hits, six walks with five strikeouts.
Next up for New York is a six-game series in four days as the Yankees visit the 1968 Detroit Tigers. Game one features Waite Hoyt (9-3) starting for the Yankees, while the Tigers counter with Denny McLain.
