The 1927 New York Yankees failed to score for just the second time this season as the 1968 Detroit Tigers posted a 4-0 victory.

Detroit’s Earl Wilson scattered seven hits and fanned 11 as he worked out of jams in the second, six and seventh.

New York starter Herb Pennock (5-6) lasted four frames as he like his team was a victim of a shutout for the second time. The 1972 Oakland A’s beat Pennock and New York 6-0 in the second contest of the season as Ken Holtzman blanked the Yankees.

The Tigers scored all four runs in the fourth as they sent Pennock to the showers.

Al Kaline reached on and error by New York shortstop Mark Koenig, but Pennock got Willie Horton to hit into a double play.

However, the Tigers were just getting started. Norm Cash, Jim Northrup and Bill Freehan each singled to produce a run.

Don Wert capped the rally and sent all of the cardboard fans in Tiger Stadium into a frenzy as he blasted a three-run bomb that put Detroit up 4-0.

Wilcy Moore and Myles Thomas both pitched two scoreless innings for Detroit, but the Tigers were unable to muster any offense against Wilson.

Urban Shocker (9-0) will start on the mound for the Yankees in the third affair of the six-game set, while Mickey Lolich gets the ball for the Tigers.
