The 1927 New York Yankees put the game away in the ninth, while starting pitcher Wilcy Moore went the distance in a 5-0 victory over the 1968 Detroit Tigers.
Moore (10-3) allowed four hits with four strikeouts, while surviving five walks as he was helped by three double plays.
The affair was scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Yankees picked up a pair of runs with two outs.
Earle Combs reached on an error by Detroit first baseman Norm Cash before Mark Koenig drilled a mistake pitch by Tigers starter Joe Sparma for a two-run homer, which was his second long ball of the season.
From that point, Sparma was able to hold off the Yankees until the ninth. Overall, the Detroit hurler gave up five hits and four runs with three being earned.
After Bob Meusel was retired on a fly out to left, Joe Dugan singled and Pat Collins doubled to end the day for Sparma.
Don McMahon took over on the mound for the Tigers and he got Moore on a pop up to short. However, he then but he surrendered a two-run single to Combs.
Koenig blasted his seventh triple of the season to bring home Combs with the final New York tally.
The fifth contest of the six-game series in Tiger Stadium features George Pipgras (5-5) starting for the Yankees against Detroit’s John Hiller.
