Bob Lemon led the 1948 Cleveland Indians to a second straight win over the 1927 New York Yankees.

Lemon tossed a four-hitter and drove in what turned out to be the decisive run in the 3-1 victory for the Indians.

Both teams scored in the second inning with Tony Lazzeri knocking New York’s tally with a single. Lou Gehrig scored after he had doubled for his first of two hits on the day.

The Indians scored when Eddie Robinson hit into a double play. Ken Keltner raced home from third after he reached on a lead off double. Keltner had moved to third on a single by Larry Doby to set up the run.

Cleveland took the lead in the bottom of the seventh in what was the final inning of work for New York starter Waite Hoyt.

Doby started the rally by hitting a grounder that Lazzeri misplayed for an error. Robinson followed with a single that advanced Doby to third.

Indians catcher Jim Hegan hit a ball back to Hoyt as the Yankees were able to retire Doby at the plate for the first out. With runners now at first and second, Lemon smacked a single that put the Indians on top 2-1. Dale Mitchell produced the final run with a ground out to Lazzeri.

Hoyt (10-4) allowed eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts. George Pipgras threw a perfect eighth for New York and had a strikeout.

For the Indians, Lemon finished with four walks and five strikeouts.

Herb Pennock (5-6) is set to start the third contest of the four-game series for the Yankees with Bob Feller going to the mound for the Indians.
