Don Buford hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the lead held up for the 1970 Baltimore Orioles in a 2-1 victory over the 1927 New York Yankees.
Paul Blair led off the bottom of the first with a single against New York starter George Pipgras and Buford followed with his blast.
Baltimore starter Tom Phoebus limited the Yankees to five hits in his complete game effort. He walked four with four strikeouts.
New York’s run came in the sixth. Lou Gehrig began the frame with a single before Tony Lazerri moved him to third with a single.
Bob Meusel hit a grounder to Baltimore third baseman Brooks Robinson who fired to second to cut down Lazzeri, but the New York left fielder beat out the relay throw from Dave Johnson as Gehrig raced home.
Phoebus surrendered a walk the rest of the way as he shut down the Yankees.
Pipgras (6-6) allowed seven hits as he blanked the Orioles over the final seven innings as he went the distance for the Yankees. He walked four and fanned eight.
In the third contest of the four-game set, the Yankees send Waite Hoyt (10-4) the mound as Baltimore manager Earl Weaver will give the ball to Jim Palmer.
