Clete Boyer had singles in the seventh and ninth to collect the only hits for the Yankees, but there were a lot of problems for Cuellar through out the contest as New York left nine runners on base.

Cuellar walked five and two others reached on errors by Orioles shortstop Mark Belanger and Dave Johnson.

The biggest threat the Yankees had occured in the sixth with two outs. Cuellar walked Roger Maris and then Mickey Mantle before New York loaded the bases on Johnson’s miscue on a grounder by Yogi Berra.

Johnny Blanchard hit a smash that New York second baseman Bobby Richardson snared for the final out.

New York’s Bill Stafford (12-4) suffered the loss as he dropped his second decision in his last three starts. He gave up three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Jim Coates went the final two frames on the mound for the Yankees surrendering three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Johnson’s two-run single in the fourth gave the Orioles the lead before Cuellar smacked a double that scored another tally and Baltimore led 3-0.

Baltimore added three more runs in the seventh against Coates. Belanger drove in two with a double and he scored on a single by Frank Robinson as the Orioles put the game away.
