The 1927 New York Yankees exploded for a 12-0 victory over the 1972 Oakland A’s to take the second contest of a three-game series.

Earle Combs, Babe Ruth, Tony Lazzeri and Joe Dugan had three hits each as the Yankees totaled 19 overall to win their third contest in a row.

Despite having just two hits, Lou Gehrig made the most noise with his bat in Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum as he finished with a pair of homers and knocked in five runs.

With two outs in the top of the first, Ruth was walked by A’s starter Vida Blue before Gehrig blasted a two-run shot for his fourth long ball of the season.

In the bottom of the first, New York starter Wilcy Moore was able to get out of a bases loaded jam as he retired George Hendrick on a routine fly ball to Bob Meusel in left.

Blue was able to wiggle out of a bases loaded situation in the second as Combs bounced into a double play to end the Yankees rally.

Combs gave the Yankees a 3-0 advantage in the fifth with a RBI single.

The score remained the same until the top of the eighth when the Yankees sent a dozen batters to the plate and scored seven times in seven hits against the Oakland bullpen.

Bob Locker replaced Blue to begin the eighth and the bases were loaded after three hitters. Meusel singled, Lazzeri walked and Dugan had an infield single that Locker couldn’t handle.

After Locker retired Pat Collins and Moore on infield pop-ups, the wheels feel off for the Oakland pitcher as Combs tripled to clear the bases and put the Yankees up 6-0.

A’s manager Dick Williams called on Darold Knowles to get things under control, but it didn’t work.

Mark Koenig singled to make it 7-0 as Combs scored. Ruth walked and then Gehrig drilled his fifth homer of the season to drive in three runs and it was 10-0.

Although Rollie Fingers is a closer, Williams needed to stop the Yankees. Fingers gave up a walk and a hit, but got out of the inning with out any more runs scoring.

With Oakland’s relief core depleted, Fingers was forced to work the ninth. Ruth added a RBI single and the final run scored when Gehrig reached on an error.

Moore went the distance for the Yankees allowing just five hits with four strikeouts as he posted his second shutout of the season.

In the series finale, the Yankees send George Pipgras to the mound as the A’s counter with Dave Hamilton.
