Jon Garland won the pitcher’s duel with Ralph Terry as the 2005 Chicago White Sox defeated the 1961 New York Yankees 1-0.
Garland allowed just four hits with five strikeouts in his complete game effort, while Terry (5-7) gave up six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings. Luis Arroyo worked a perfect eighth for New York as he fanned two.
Scoring opportunities were limited as the White Sox were able to cash in on the only inning that had more than one base runner.
Scott Podsednik led off with a single and two outs later Terry walked Paul Konerko.
Carl Everett produced the only run of the affair with a single that scored Podsednik from second.
In the second match-up of the four-game series, Rollie Sheldon (3-7) will start for the Yankees as the White Sox counter with Jose Contreras.
