Yogi Berra had a pair of big swings and Bill Stafford did the job on mound as the 1961 New York Yankees beat the 1970 Baltimore Orioles.
After a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first by Tony Kubek, Berra smacked a pitch by Baltimore starter Mike Cuellar for a solo homer in the second as the Yankees led 2-0.
Baltimore picked up its run in the fourth when Brooks Robinson doubled and scored on a single by Dave Johnson to cut Baltimore’s deficit in half.
In the New York portion of the fourth, Berra drilled his second solo shot of the affair to make it 3-1. Berra now had 15 homers this season with 43 RBI.
The Yankees added their final two runs in the fifth. Kubek had a RBI ground out before Roger Maris had an infield single that produced the final tally.
Stafford (13-4) continues to top the Yankees in victories this season as he went the distance allowing six hits with four strikeouts.
Cuellar went six innings for Baltimore giving up nine hits with three strikeouts. Pete Richert tossed the last two allowing a hit with a strikeout.
Ralph Terry (5-7) is scheduled to start the second contest of the four-game series for the Yankees, while Orioles manager Earl Weaver will give the ball to Dave McNally.
