Dave Johnson smacked a pair of homers as the 1970 Baltimore Orioles beat the 1961 New York Yankees 8-3.
The Yankees grabbed an early advantage against Baltimore starter Dave McNally as Tony Kubek doubled and scored on a single by Roger Maris in the bottom of the first.
Frank Robinson put the Orioles in front with a two-run homer in the third off New York starter Ralph Terry.
Johnson struck with his first bomb in the sixth as he drove on a pair to make it 4-1.
New York answered in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Elston Howard that cut the deficit to two runs.
Back-to-back singles by Clete Boyer and pinch-hitter Bob Cerv, which was followed by walk to Bobby Richardson ended the day for McNally,
Pete Richert was called from the bullpen by Baltimore manager Earl Weaver and he was able to get out of the bases loaded jam without surrendering a run.
Terry (5-8) left the mound after seven and New York manager Ralph Houk picked Jim Coates to take his place.
It didn’t work out in the eighth as Brooks Robinson had a RBI single and Johnson smashed another two-run homer and the Orioles led 7-2.
Yogi Berra hit his 16th homer in the eighth off Richert, who would go on to pick up a save with just that blemish on his record for the contest.
Don Buford capped the affair with a solo homer in the ninth off Coates, who finished up for New York.
In the third contest of the four-game series Rollie Sheldon will start for the Yankees, while the Orioles counter with Jim Hardin.
