Wilcy Moore went the distance for the 1927 New York Yankees in a 3-1 victory over the 1970 Baltimore Orioles.
While Moore (12-4) didn’t appear dominant with just four strikeouts and three walks, he held the Orioles to just four hits to tie Waite Hoyt for the team lead in wins this season.
The only blemish for Moore was a solo homer by Frank Robinson in the fourth inning.
New York grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second against Orioles starter Jim Hardin on a clutch hit by catcher Pat Collins.
Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri started the rally with back-to-back singles. Bob Meusel hit into a what looked like a double play, but Orioles second baseman Dave Johnson and shortstop Mark Belanger could only get one out as the New York left fielder beat the relay throw.
With Yankees at first and third, Hardin struck out Joe Dugan before Collins came through with a double. Meusel raced home from first base as both runners scored.
After Robinson’s blast made it 2-1, Meusel’s RBI ground out in the sixth produced the last run for the Yankees.
Hardin allowed nine hits and fanned seven with a pair of walks in eight frames on the mound for the Orioles.
In the finale of the four-game series, New York is set to start George Pipgras (7-6), while Baltimore has Tom Phoebus slated to get the ball from manager Earl Weaver.
