Tom Phoebus controlled everything on the mound for the 1970 Baltimore Orioles as they blanked the 1927 New York Yankees 2-0.
Phoebus gave up a pair of singles to Bob Meusel in the second and Mark Koenig in the fourth in his complete game effort.
From that point, the Baltimore hurler allowed one runner to reach base the rest of the way when he walked Tony Lazzeri in the seventh as he retired 18 of the last 19 hitters he faced. He also finished with six strikeouts.
Baltimore picked up its two runs in the third inning off New York starter George Pipgras.
Chico Salmon began the rally with a single. Phoebus moved Salmon to second with a sacrifice bunt.
Don Buford smacked a RBI double to put the Orioles in front 1-0. After Paul Blair was retired on a ground ball, Frank Robinson doubled to bring home Buford with the final run of the contest.
Pipgras (7-8) also went the distance giving up five hits with three walks, while fanning eight.
Waite Hoyt (12-4) is slated to start the opener of a four-game series for New York as the Yankees entertain the 1948 Cleveland Indians, who counter with their ace Bob Lemon.
