A pair of homers in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the 1970 Baltimore Orioles defeated the 1961 New York Yankees 4-2.
With the Orioles leading 1-0, Boog Powell tagged New York starter Bud Daley with a solo shot. Brooks Robinson followed with a single and then Elrod Hendricks drilled s two-run blast and Baltimore led by four.
A two-run homer by Mickey Mantle in the sixth cut New York’s deficit in half, but that’s all the Yankees could muster against Baltimore starter Tom Phoebus. It was Mantle’s 39th long ball of the season and he’s now driven in 93 runs.
Phoebus went eight innings leaving contest after walking Johnny Blanchard in the ninth. He limited the Yankees to five hits with seven strikeouts to pick up the win.
Pete Richert earned a save as he finished the affair by fanning Tony Kubek with two runners on base.
Baltimore’s first run came in the second on an infield single by Phoebus.
Daley (6-10) suffered the loss as he tossed five innings giving up all four runs on a eight hits with two strikeouts. Jim Coates and Tex Clevenger each worked two scoreless innings the rest of the way with both allowing two hits.
Next up for New York is a four-game series in Yankee Stadium against the 1948 Cleveland Indians. Whitey Ford (10-6) starts the opener for the Yankees as the Indians send Bob Lemon to the mound..
