PHILADELPHIA – George Blanda booted a 20-yard field goal in overtime to give the Houston Oilers and 27-24 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1960 American Football League-National Football League Championship game.
Blanda’s kick capped a 12-play, 59-yard drive that ended the affair with 7:06 on the clock in the extra session.
Houston backs Dave Smith and Billy Cannon gained 47 of the 59 yards during the final drive. Smith led the way on the ground for the game with 170 yards, while Cannon rushed for 134 with three scores.
The Oilers built a 10-7 halftime edge thanks to a 22-yard field goal from Blanda in the first period and an 11-yard score by Cannon with 2:40 left in the second quarter.
Philadelphia gained some momentum just before the intermission as Billy Ray Barnes had an 8-yard run that got the Eagles to within three points with 58 ticks left.
By early in the fourth quarter, Cannon added two more touchdowns as the Oilers led 24-7 with 14:40 remaining in regulation.
With a rowdy crowd behind them, the Eagles responded with 17 straight points to send the contest into sudden death.
Clarence Peaks had a two-yard run before Norm Van Brocklin tossed an 18-yard scoring strike to Bobby Walston to make it 24-21.
With 14 seconds left the fourth, Walston kicked a 34-yard field goal to tie it.
