RICHMOND, Ind. – Centerville and Union County both grabbed a share of the Tri-Eastern Conference girls golf championship on Saturday.
The Bulldogs won Saturday’s TEC championship event at the Highland Lake Golf Club, while the Patriots claimed the regular season crown.
“We’ve had a program 18 years since 1999,” Centerville Head Coach Damon Anderson said. “This is our first. I’m really proud of them. They handled the conditions and won.”
Centerville won the meet with a 395 and Union County finished with a 404.
The Patriots were 5-0 in the TEC standings heading into Saturday. Their regular season match with Northeastern was postponed twice, so the two squads used the scores from the front nine on Saturday to determine the final records.
With the combined regular season and tournament results, the Bulldogs and Patriots tie for the overall TEC championship.
“We had some struggles, but we got some things done that we wanted to accomplish,” Union County Head Coach Tony Gulley said. “I’m proud of the girls. I know they’re a little bit down because they didn’t play like they wanted to, but I’m still very proud.”
Although it was the first championship for the Bulldogs, it was the ninth for Union County. The Patriots won titles from 2002-2006 then again in 2010 before recording back-to-back championships in 2012-13.
On Saturday, Winchester was third with a 417 and defending league champ Hagerstown was fourth at 430. Lincoln finished fifth at 504 and Northeastern was sixth at 570. Tri did not have a team score.
Centerville’s Chloe Brown earned medalist honors as she led the field with an 86.
“I’m trying not to cry,” an emotional Brown said shortly after being declared the overall winner. “My goal was to be all-conference. Winning it was just amazing.”
“I kept pretty mellow,” Brown added of her play on the wet course. “It helped me a lot and my chipping was amazing.”
Joining Brown in the All-TEC squad by finishing in the top 10 were Becca Champerlain of Winchester (90), Haylee King of Union County (94), Linsey Peavie of Tri (94), Sydney McClure (97), Regan McKee of Hagerstown (97), Emilee Thackrey of Hagerstown (97), Brooke Killion of Centerville (98), Hanna Boggs of Tri (104) and Myra Robinson of Centerville (104).
Brown was equally pleased with sharing the TEC title.
“There’s been pressure on us,” she said. “We were undefeated for so long and Union County beat us. That staggered us a little.”
