CENTERVILLE, Ind. – The Centerville baseball team came up short at home on Monday as the Bulldogs fell 6-5 to Monroe Central.
Ranked No. 7 in the Class 2A coaches poll this week, the Bulldogs were behind 4-0 after two innings before they rallied to close the gap.
Justyn North had a two-run triple in the third inning to cut the deficit in half before the Bears added a run in the following frame to make it 5-2.
Pinch-runner Trey Wilson scored on a wild pitch to get Centerville to within two in the bottom of the fourth. Nolan Witte added with a sacrifice fly and the Bulldogs trailed 5-4.
After two scoreless frames, Monroe Central (1-0) picked up another run in the seventh to lead 6-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs picked up a run on a double by North as the Bears were able to hang on for the win.
North and Ricky Torres led the Bulldogs with two hits each.
Centerville starter Tyler Phenis (0-1) worked four innings on the mound as he got the loss.
The Bulldogs (1-1) travel to Shenandoah on Wednesday.
