RICHMOND, Ind. – The Centerville baseball team opened its season on Saturday with a 17-8 victory over Seton in the first game of a doubleheader at McBride Stadium.
A windy snowstorm took care of the second contest with two outs in the top of the first frame as the falling white powder began to cover the field.
“It’s good to get the ball game in and get the rust off,” Centerville Head Coach Tracey Crull said. “I’m pretty happy with everything.”
“Both teams really hit the ball well and I was really happy with what we did,” Crull added. “Up and down the lineup, the kids did really well.”
A dozen runs in the final two innings proved to be the difference for the Bulldogs (1-0), who were ranked seventh in the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association Class 2A pre-season poll.
Entering the contest with two outs in the fourth, Jack Willis (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Centerville starter Nolan Witte. He surrendered a run on three hits with three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs led early 3-0, but the Cardinals (0-1) scored four times in the bottom the the second to go on top by a run.
Chris Pritchett tied the game at 4-4 with a RBI single in the fourth. Seton took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning before the Bulldogs were able to answer in the final two innings.
Witte led the offense with a pair of two-run doubles, while Ricky Torres, Blake Shook and Pritchett also had two hits each.
Devin Christian added a double and a sacrifice fly as he knocked in three runs, while Peyton Hobson knocked in a run with a hit.
Centerville is back in action at home on Monday against Monroe Central.
