CENTERVILLE, Ind. – The Centerville girls tennis team won its ninth straight Tri-Eastern Conference title on Monday as the Bulldogs came away with a pair of championships.
“The girls worked really hard this year,” Centerville Head Coach Randy Ecker said. “It was really a nice way to finish the season and go into sectionals.”
“We were guaranteed at least a share of it,” Ecker added. “It could have been a three-way tie. We knew we had a part of it, but we were kind of selfish, We didn’t want to share.”
At No. 3 singles, Morgan Guenther defeated Lincoln’s Kami Laymon 6-4, 6-1.
Centerville’s top doubles squad of Morgan Toschlog and Sidne Thompson won 6-3, 6-4 over Northeastern’s Dayna Newman and Kasey Andrews.
“I was glad the girls really came to play,” Ecker said. “There was some good competition.”
Winchester also had two winners.
After dropping the opening set, Mariah Roberts fought back to beat Lincoln’s Jamie Buhl 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Kate Riggin and Lindsey Schroeder won 6-2, 6-0 over Tri High’s No. 2 doubles team of MaKenna Hawk and Kiela Cash.
Lincoln’s Rachel Merida won the other title at No. 2 singles as she posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Centerville’s Katy Stewart.
