KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind. – The Centerville girls soccer team needed penalty kicks on Saturday to win its first sectional title since 2013.
Surviving an intense rainstorm for most of the match, the Bulldogs had a 3-2 edge in the PKs over Union County to advance to next Saturday’s Heritage Christian Regional.
The Bulldogs face Triton Central at 10 a.m. The second game featuring Southmont and Covenant Christian is scheduled for noon with the championship slated for 7 p.m.
The victory gave Centerville its third overall sectional title with the first coming in 2009.
Neither team was able to score in Saturday’s Class 1A sectional finale until the rain stopped.
Centerville’s Mackenzie Tipton found the back of the net at the 16:45 mark of the second period.
Union County’s Kendall Jones scored to tie the contest at 1-1 with 11:45 left in regulation.
Centerville’s Cassidy Weiss had six saves, while Union County’s Kyla Miller had nine stops.
After a scoreless overtime session, the stage was set for the penalty kicks.
