WINCHESTER, Ind. – Mariah Roberts scored 31 points for the Winchester girls basketball team on Wednesday as the Falcons fell 61-53 to Wapahani.
Roberts hit four 3-pointers and made 7-of-9 free throws, while leading the Falcons (1-1) with six rebounds.
Becca Neville added 10 points and five rebounds for Winchester.
Behind Roberts and Neville, the Falcons were able to build a 15-12 advantage after one quarter.
The Falcons continued to hold on to their lead in the second stanza as they went on top 24-19 when Roberts drilled a 3-pointer with 5:01 left before halftime.
However, Wapahani (1-0) finished the period with an 11-0 run to hold a 30-24 lead at the intermission.
“We made too many unforced errors,” Winchester Head Coach Holly Gutierrez said. “We got a lot of turnovers and we had a hard time scoring for awhile.”
“We’ve got to get better each game,” she added. “The big picture is at the end and that’s what we’re after.”
Haley Strombeck led Wapahani with 20 points. Kambrey Jolley recorded a double-double for the Raiders with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Winchester won the junior varsity contest 43-30 with Hannah Graft leading the Falcons with 10 points.
Next up for the Falcons is a trip to No. 9 Shenandoah on Saturday.
