HAGERSTOWN, Ind. – A barrage of 3-pointers made the difference on Saturday for the Lincoln girls basketball team as the Golden Eagles defeated Northeastern 45-43 to win the Wayne County Tournament.
“We feel great,” Lincoln Head Coach Garry Laymon said. “We knew we were in for a good game.”
Northeastern led for most of the first quarter as the Knights built an 18-10 advantage.
“We survived that and made a nice run at the end of the second quarter and came out and played pretty well in the third quarter,” Laymon said.
Trailing 23-20 at the intermission, the Golden Eagles answered with five treys in the third as they grabbed a 37-31
“We all had to go out there and do what we do best,” said Allie Owens, who hit the first three long bombs that put the Golden Eagles on top. “We just turned it on in the third quarter and kept it going.”
Lincoln was able to hang on thanks to a switch on defense.
“We did a better job of finding shooters,” Laymon said. “We went to a zone and Olivia Davis did a nice job of controlling the post.”
Owens led the Golden Eagles with 14 points, while Davis finished with 10 points. Both players grabbed seven rebounds.
Laynie Russell tossed in nine points and Hannah Hall had eight.
For Northeastern, Jenna McFarland had a game-high 15 points.
Madi Clay and Emma Wright had eight points apiece. Wright led the Knights with 11 rebounds.
Both teams return to action Tuesday on the road.
Lincoln (8-7) is at Union (1-13) and Northeastern (8-7) visits Tri High (12-4).
