RICHMOND, Ind. – Top-ranked Hagerstown reached the title game in the Class 1A sectional as the Tigers defeated host Seton 3-0 on Saturday.
It was the second straight shut out in the sectional for the Tigers.
“Both games so far our pitchers have done what they’re done all year and put a lot of zeros up,” Hagerstown Head Coach Brad Catey said.
Trey Kelley went the distance on the mound for the Tigers and held the Cardinals to one hit with seven strikeouts.
“It was a mix of Trey being on his game and defensively we were great,” Catey said. “We just played solid defensively and scored enough runs early to get a win.”
With the win, the Tigers (21-3) square off with Union City (10-11) on John Cate Field at McBride Stadium Monday at 5 p.m. Union City beat Blue River 6-5 in Saturday’s second contest.
Overall, the Tigers have won six in a row since dropping three straight earlier this month.
“They kind of realized they could be beat, if they didn’t show up play their game,” Catey said. “They’ve embraced the target on their backs. We’re just taking that as a challenge.”
Drew Pyle led the Tigers with two hits as he knocked in a run. Kelley and Kory Beeson also produced the other two runs.
“In this tournament, we’ve seen to really good pitchers,” Catey said. “We did enough to come though. We’ve just got to keep working.”
