Hagerstown Wins TEC Opener

Hagerstown’s Trent Weiss steps on home plate after his first varsity homer on April 11.

HAGERSTOWN, Ind. –
Hagerstown’s baseball team started it defense of its Tri-Eastern Conference title on Wednesday with a 12-0 victory over Lincoln.

Drew Pyle had 10 strikeouts as he tossed a one-hitter for the Tigers in the five-inning contest at Lloyd Michael Field.

“If you get Drew Pyle three or four runs, the confidence is there,” Hagerstown Head Coach Brad Catey said of his IPFW bound right-hander.

The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone as they won their 24th straight conference affair.

“We had great at bats,” Catey said. “One thing we’re been talking about is having good quality at bats.”

Trent Weiss, who highlighted the second inning with a three-run homer, led the Tigers with three hits.

Pyle added two hits and knocked in three runs. Cameron Purtha also had two hits, while Brady McMillan swiped three bases.

Lincoln was playing its first TEC game since 2016 as the Golden Eagles begin anew under Head Coach Matt Brankle.

“They’ve got a great baseball guy in coach Brankle,” Catey said. “If they keep working hard, they’re going to have a bright future.”

Mason Dick had the hit for the Golden Eagles in the second inning.

“There are always going to be positives to take away from any game,” Brankle said. “We definitely have a lot of growing up to do.”

Hunter Willhite started on the mound for Lincoln and Cameron Gwin finished up.

“Hunter threw really well,” Brankle said. “We just didn’t back him up. Cameron Gwin came in a threw extremely well.”

The Tigers (2-1, 1-0) visit Shenandoah on Thursday

“It will be a good gauge for us,” Catey said. “They’re another really well-coached team.”

Lincoln (0-4, 0-1) travels to Tri High on Friday for another TEC match-up.
