UNION CITY, Ind. – Union City’s girls basketball team finished the regular season on Friday night as the Class 1A No. 9 Indians defeated Hagerstown 41-24 to claim the Tri-Eastern Conference title.
As fast start for Union City in the girls game was the difference as the Indians won their fifth TEC title and third straight.
“It was definitely something we focused on in practice,” said Union City coach Sarah Black, who is now the all-time leader in wins for the Indians with 80 in her career.”We definitely want to put some pressure on them. We knew that Hagerstown would be ready. Coach (Chris) Oliger does a great job.”
“We’ve shared the TEC the last two years, so winning it outright on our home floor, it was great,” Black added. “I’m really proud of the seniors. They are a huge part of this program and the success that we’ve had.”
Union City seniors Kora Kerns, Courtney Wise, Kelsey Zimmers and Baylee Hartman were each honored prior to their final home game.
“It was definitely emotional,” Kerns said. “It was crazy. We’ve been together for nine years. I can’t believe it’s over.”
The Indians led 16-8 after one frame before building a 26-8 advantage by the intermission to take control of the affair.
Wise, Union City’s all-time leading scorer, finished with 14 points. Zimmers, the all-time leading 3-point shooter for the Indians, tossed in 11 points.
For Hagerstown, Madison Brown led the way with 10 points. Brynti Dale added five points to go with a game-high nine rebounds.
