RICHMOND, Ind. – The Union City girls basketball team was able to maintain its distance from Richmond on Saturday night as the Indians defeated the Red Devils 41-26 at the Tiernan Center.
“We didn’t play very well,” Union City coach Sarah Black said. “We didn’t come out ready to go. We had some girls in foul trouble early.”
Richmond led 2-0 on a pair of free throws in the first three minutes of the contest, but by the end of the frame the Indians led 9-5. By halftime, Union City was on top 16-11.
“We had some girls step up big,” Black said. “It was a team win tonight and it took everybody. We overcame that adversity even when things weren’t going our way.”
Kelsey Zimmers led the Indians with 15 points. Justiss Cantu added eight with six free throws in the fourth quarter. Baylee Hartman contributed six points as she grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Indians won the JV contest 32-27 with Mackenzie Green scoring 10 points for the Indians. Kierra Wright led the Red Devils with 11.
