PARKER CITY, Ind. – Union City’s baseball team won its second Randolph County Tournament title in the last three years as the Indians beat Winchester 6-5 in Saturday’s championship game.
Nic Wells led Union City in the eight-inning affair at Monroe Central as he came on in relief of Jacob Fulk in the first inning facing a three-run deficit with one out.
Wells went on to pitch 7 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run and giving up six hits.
“Nic is just a fantastic competitor,” Union City Head Coach Bill Bradbury said in a press release. “Seeing him step up in this situation and perform the way he did was just amazing, but these are the types of situations that he thrives on.”
“The other coaches and I were waiting for Nic to hit a wall, but it just didn’t happen,” Bradbury added. “He just got stronger.”
Jacob Moore led the Indians with two hits, while Trevor Spence, Jacob Curry, Kyler Purdin, Cameron Luster, Gabe Loesch, Zach Bradbury and Fulk all had one hit. Purdin and Fulk both knocked in two runs.
With the Indians leading after scoring in the top of the eighth, two defensive plays from Luster in right field may have saved the championship for Union City with the last one coming on the final out of the contest.
