FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – The Northeastern girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Monday as the Knights beat Seton 40-28.
“It feels good to get that first win,” Northeastern Head Coach Princess Darnell said. “We didn’t play our best basketball, but haven’t had a chance to make adjustments.”
The Knights (1-5) have played three games in the last four days and have another contest on Tuesday at Monroe Central.
“I was proud of us,” Darnell said. “We got our win, so that relieved some of the stress, but we are definitely hungry for more.”
Madi Clay led the Knights with 16 points in the non-conference affair in Larry Moore Gymnasium.
Chaise Helton and Mikayla Hornung added eight points each. Hornung and Tatum Jordan led the Knights with nine rebounds apiece.
Brooke Gray led the Cardinals (0-3) with 15 points. Maggie Westjohn pulled down a dozen rebounds for Seton.
After Seton took an early 2-0 led when Westjohn hit a pair of free throws, the Knights countered with nine straight points capped by a score by Hornung with 2:40 left in the first period.
Northeastern led 17-4 after the first quarter. The Knights were able to add to their margin in the second frame to hold a 26-11 halftime advantage.
After the third period, Northeastern was in front 33-17. The Cardinals were able to rally in the final quarter to cut the deficit to 38-28 on a 3-pointer by Mackenzie Henry with 1:37 remaining in the contest, but that was as close as Seton could get.
