Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.
George Blanda led the charge as the Houston Oilers clinched the top seed in the East Division with a 30-17 win over the Buffalo Bills.
The Oilers (9-4) hold the tiebreaker with the New York Jets (8-4) heading into the final week of the season.
After Jack Kemp gave the Bills an early lead with a touchdown pass to Elbert Dubenion, Blanda found John Carson with a 7-yard score to tie the contest as the first quarter came to an end.
Dave Smith added a 3-yard touchdown run for the Oilers early in the second before Pete Gogolak‘s 39-yard field goal cut Buffalo’s deficit to 14-10.
Blanda hooked up with Carson again from 13 yards with 1:04 remaining before halftime as the Oilers built a 21-10 advantage.
In the second half, Blanda kicked field goals of 37, 28 and 41 yards to put the game away.
Buffalo’s final score came late in the third period on a 12-yard pass from Kemp to Glenn Bass.
