Legends of the AFL: Week 5

Editor’s Note: The games for the Legends of the American Football League simulation are played on computer with Action! PC Football. The contests are played with the “coaching” by a human as well as computer simulation. One season per franchise was selected for league play with the 10 teams that merged with the National Football League competing for the championship. Stories from the action will appear on Press Room Pass each Sunday until the completion of the 14-week regular season and playoffs.

Jack Kemp made the most of his situation.

The Buffalo Bills were facing a 3rd and six when Kemp called an audible and dropped back to pass just 10 yards away from the goal line.

Kemp scrambled for the winning score as the Bills beat the Boston Patriots 33-27 in overtime in Fenway Park.

The winning touchdown was set up by Booker Edgerson, who picked off a pass from Boston quarterback Babe Parilli and ran it back 42 yards to the Patriots 14.

After two runs from Buffalo’s Cookie Gilchrist netted just four yards, Kemp weaved his way to the Boston defense to win it.

It was quite a comeback by the Bills, who trailed 27-13 early in the final stanza after Parilli threw his third touchdown pass of the day with 10:23 left to play.

However, the Bills were able to put together two scoring drives in the period to tie the contest at 27-27.

Gilchrist capped both drives with runs of three and two yards with the last one coming with 2:23 remaining in regulation.

Kemp completed 19-of-34 for 306 yards with two scores and four interceptions, while Parilli was 24-of-47 for 322 yards, three touchdowns and three picks.

Gilchrist had six grabs for 100 yards and a score to go along with 29 yards on the ground and the pair of late touchdowns.

Art Graham led the Patriots with nine receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

The victory keeps the Bills tied with the Houston Oilers at the top of the East Division with a 4-1 mark. Boston and the New York Jets are tied for third place at 3-2.
