CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. – Lincoln’s girls basketball program under went a change at the top after last season, but the faces remain familiar.
Garry Laymon is now the head coach for the Golden Eagles, while former mentor Rob Bills will now serve as his assistant.
“I had to fill in for Rob last year while he was out and I was head coach in Ohio when I lived there,” Laymon said of his promotion from assistant. “Rob and I think a lot alike, so really very little has changed other than we swapped seats.”
The Golden Eagles won a sectional title two years ago and posted a 19-4 mark last season.
“We want to continue success that we have had last two years,” Laymon said. “We will focus on getting better as season progresses and try to be playing our best basketball at end of the season.”
Which may not be an easy task.
“We lost 31 points and 17 rebounds per game to graduation last year,” Laymon said. “Filling that void will be big in determining how successful we are this year.”
“We have three starters and five players, who played extensive varsity minutes back, so that is a good foundation,” Laymon added.
An All-Tri-Eastern Conference Honorable Mention selection, junior Allie Owens is the leading returner with per game averages of 9.2 in scoring, 4.9 in rebounds and 3.6 in assists.
Juniors Emmie Pugh (6.1 PPG) and Laynie Russell (5.2) are the other top scorers back.
The seniors on the roster are Hannah Black, Olivia Davis, Ryanne Davis, Hannah Hall, Jessica Harmer and Katie Pollitt.
Rachel Merida and Kylee Smith are juniors, while the sophomores are Sierra Hill, Mallory Kern, Delanie Russell, Clara Tyree and Audrey Upchurch
Lincoln begins the season at home against Anderson Prep on Friday. The Golden Eagles start conference play at Centerville on Tuesday, Nov. 21.
