The top performances in Major League Baseball this week were by Lance McCullers of the Houston Astros and Sonny Gray of the Oakland A’s.
In just his fourth big league start since his call up from Double-A Corpus Christi last month, McCullers tossed his first complete game for the Astros in a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles in Houston on Wednesday, June 3. McCullers held the Orioles to four hits with 11 strikeouts as he threw 107 pitches.
Drafted in the first round by Houston in 2012, the 21-year old McCullers was 3-1 with a 0.62 ERA in six contests. In 24 innings for the Astros, he is 2-0 and has a 1.88 ERA with 29 strikeouts.
On the same day of McCullers’ outing, Gray raised his record to 7-2 this season with a 6-1 win in Detroit, while lowering his league best ERA to 1.65.
Gray worked eight innings and surrendered a pair of hits without giving up a run and he had seven strikeouts. The Tigers scored in the ninth off Fernando Rodriguez.
