LEO, Ind. – Five in a row for the Northeastern softball team.
The Knights won a pair of games on Saturday to extend their winning streak to five games as they raised their record to 5-2.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a week in softball where the entire team came up big and fed off one another like this group did this week.” Northeastern Head Coach Geoff Williams said in the team’s press release.
Northeastern began the day with a 7-3 victory over Class 4A Elkhart Central and then posted a 7-4 win over Leo, which won the Class 3A state title in 2014 and finished second last season.
In the opener, freshman Lena Smith earned her first victory as she worked the final five innings against Elkhart Central (1-4) in relief of Katie Schneider, who was schedule to start the second contest.
The Knights led 1-0 before that took control of the contest with four runs in the third inning.
Sierra Gilmore and Schneider led the Knights with three hits each, including homers by both players. Morgan Benjamin and Leah Hoskins added two hits apiece.
Schneider tossed a complete game in the second contest against Leo (3-2) giving up four hits, four runs (one earned) with four strikeouts.
The game was tied at 1-1 when Northeastern scored five times in the fourth to gain command of the affair.
Hoskins and Katlyn Williams had three hits each for the Knights, while Gilmore and Carli Williams both had two hits.
Northeastern resumes its Tri-Eastern Conference slate on Wednesday with a trip to Union County.
