FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – Northeastern’s boys tennis team won its first Tri-Eastern Conference match of the season on Wednesday as the Knights defeated Union County 3-2.
With the contest tied at 2-2, the decisive battle was at No. 2 singles as Northeastern’s Nate Irwin outlasted Jacob Stansberry 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Northeastern’s Hunter Delk picked up the other win for the Knights in singles as he won 6-4, 6-2 over Joey Weller at No. 3.
At No. 1 singles, Leighton Schulte of Union County won 6-4, 6-2 over Elijah Kenworthy 6-4, 6-2.
The two teams split in the doubles competition.
In the top spot, Union County’s Owen Miller and Austin Bowling beat Michael White and Zach Bolley 6-2, 6-4, while Northeastern’s Peyton Cohee and Zach Jaykoski defeated Alex Fuller and Tyler Soper 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.
Both team are in action on Thursday with conference matches as Northeastern travels to Tri and Union County entertains Hagerstown.
