FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – This week has been pretty good for Northeastern’s Smith brothers.

Robert Smith announced that he was verbally committing to Cincinnati State to continue his basketball career and then his younger sibling, Tyler, found out he had made the Indiana Junior All-Stars.

“I’m very proud of my brother,” Tyler Smith said. “He has made it such a long way in his high school career and I know that he will do great at the next level.”

Coached by Andre Tate, the Surge compete in the Ohio Community College Conference.

“They are a really good ball club,” Robert Smith said. “They have a really good coaching staff and they are really down to Earth.”

“I’m glad to play at the next level,” Robert added. “All I think about everyday is basketball and giving little kids something to look up to.”

Northeastern Head Coach Brent Ross was pleased with Robert’s announcement.

“I’m proud of Robert,” Ross said. “I believe he will go to Cincinnati State and focus on being the best student-athlete he can be, so he can move on and play the next level.”

Ross was equally proud of Tyler Smith’s achievement.

“It is one of the biggest honors you can achieve to get voted on by other coaches all over the state,” Ross said. “I know Tyler will continue to work, so he has a great summer and senior season.”

The junior squad is selected by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Tyler Smith finished his junior year with a Northeastern single-season scoring record of 581 points and has a career total of 1,258.

He was also named the Tri-Eastern Conference Player of the Year with a scoring average of 20.8.

“It’s a great accomplishment and means a lot to know that people see me as one of the best players in my class in the state,” Tyler Smith said. “I just want to go out there and compete and have fun.”

The Indiana Junior All-Stars will play against the Indiana All-Stars June 7 and June 9.

“I could not be more proud of him,” Robert Smith said of his brother. “That is something I did not get to do and he already knows I’ll be there for him.”

The Knights finished the season at 23-5, while winning a Class 2A sectional title and the TEC crown.

An All-TEC selection, Robert Smith scored 16.0 points per game and led the Knights with 8.8 rebounds a contest.
