LEWISVILLE, Ind. – Knightstown won its first wrestling sectional title in 20 years on Saturday as the Panthers won at Tri High.
“We knew coming in there were many great teams and many great wrestlers and it would take a tremendous team effort to achieve this goal, but that it was possible,” Knightstown Head Coach Jared Evans said.
Burias Wisner (285) won the only championship for the Panthers, who also had four others finish in second place.
“God has really blessed this team and allowed for them to build a bond and grow into a strong group,” Evans said. “This group of wrestlers has faced much adversity this year.”
“We lost three original starters for various reasons and lost another Friday night due to the flu,” Evans continued. “For these guys to continue to fight when adversity faced them speaks volumes of this team.”
It was the sixth sectional victory for Knightstown, which won in 1972, 1976, 1984, 1997 and 1998.
Centerville had five win their weight class, while Northeastern had the other champ.
Tyler Vredeveld (106), Gabe Phillips (126), Elijah Phillips (132), Danny Clark (152) and Alfredo Calderon (170) all won for Centerville.
David Berger (195) was victorious for Northeastern.
The top four in each class advance to next Saturday’s Richmond Regional.
