FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – The Union County boys basketball team used a second quarter run to set the tone for their 57-48 win over Southwestern (Hanover) on Monday morning at the Northeastern Tournament.

“The second quarter was good for us,” Union County Head Coach Mark Detweiler said.

The first quarter wasn’t that bad either for the Patriots (4-3) as the led 16-8.

After the Rebels (3-6) scored to close the gap to 16-11 with the initial score of the second period, Union County went on a 12-0 run on its way to a 28-11 halftime advantage.

“We forced some turnovers and got the tempo where we wanted it,” Detweiler said.

“We really did a nice job on the boards and got some offense rebounds and put backs,” Detweiler added. “To come out and hold them to 11 in the first half was a good start to the tournament.”

The second half, particularly was a different situation for the Patriots.

“We got sloppy with the ball,” Detweiler said. “We had too many turnovers in the second half and we didn’t value the basketball.”

Union County had 10 of its 15 miscues after the intermission, which helped Southwestern cut its deficit to 34-25 by the end of the third stanza.

“We were flat,” Detweiler said. “We just lost our aggressiveness and we were just going through the motions.”

A timeout midway through the fourth frame proved to be important for the Patriots as they led 54-44 with 4:52 left to play.

“We responded with a couple of baskets back-to-back and got the lead back to 16,” Detweiler said.

Preston Scott and Breyden Wicker led the Patriots with 13 points each. Dillon Miller finished with 10 points and Logan Sanford tossed in eight.

Tryston Wheatley led Southwestern with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Union County faces Lawrenceburg (4-3) in Monday’s second round. Lawrenceburg beat Monroe Central 48-25 in its opener.
