LIBERTY, Ind. – The Union County boys basketball team had three players in double figures on Wednesday night as the Patriots defeated Centerville 54-32.

Defense was the focus for Union County Head Coach Mark Detweiler after the Tri-Eastern Conference affair.

“Defensively, we were really solid, on our rotations, on our zone,” Detweiler said. “Our guys did a nice job of battling.”

“Our press was effective early, so we were able to take some possessions away from them,” Detweiler continued. “I can’t find a lot of fault with what we did at the defensive end of the floor.”

Offensively, both teams struggled to to find their shooting range until Union County’s Logan Sanford scored at the 5:33 mark of the first quarter with a 3-pointer. He added another basket at with 3:59 left to put the Patriots up 5-0.

“We had five points and five turnovers to start the game,” Detweiler said. “We were just in a hurry and rushing things a little bit.”

Centerville’s Matt Stamper scored the first basket for the Bulldogs with 2:58 to go. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs that would be their only points in the opening period as they trailed 14-2.

“Nobody is immune to a bad shooting night,” Centerville Head Coach Seve Beach said. “It’s just part of the game. It happens.”

Union County eventually led 29-8 by halftime.

“We were doing some decent things offensively to start,” Beach said. “They hit a couple buckets. We obviously did not, but then we started letting that slowly affect getting into our press when we finally did score.”

Sanford and Dillon Miller led the Patriots with 15 points each, while Nevada Lakes tossed in 11.

Miller also grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, which pleased his coach.

“We’ve been challenging him to step up and move more and be more active,” Detweiler said. “What a great night.”

“Logan was solid again so our two guys were really good,” Detweiler added. “Nevada Lakes off the bench was a big spark.”

Stamper had a dozen points for Centerville as Myles Cunningham led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds.

Union County won the JV contest 55-21 with Denton Shepler and Luke Haas leading the way with 10 points each. Tommy Fordonski topped the Bulldogs with six points.

Both teams return to action on Saturday. Union County (10-6, 3-1) visits Jac-Cen-Del, while Centerville (3-9, 0-3) is at Class 2A No. 4 Shenandoah.
