ELWOOD, Ind. – The Union County baseball team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday at the Elwood Invitational.
The Patriots started the day with a 7-6 win over Twin Lakes before beating the host school 9-5.
Justin Witter’s run-scoring single in the seventh inning was the difference for the Patriots in the opener.
Union County gave up four runs in the second inning before scoring six times in the third to take the lead. Twin Lakes tied the contest with single runs in the fourth and fifth to set the stage for Witter’s game-winner.
Witter had two hits, while Caleb Greene added a pair of hits and two RBI. Nate Webb knocked in two runs.
Preston Scott earned the win in relief of Greene with two scoreless innings of work. Greene went the first five frames with four strikeouts.
In the second contest, Mook Shepler had four hits including a pair of homers to lead the Patriots against Elwood.
Mason Miller had three hits with a homer as he drove in four runs. Webb also had three hits with Leighton Schulte finishing with two hits.
Joey Weller tossed 4⅓ innings with five strikeouts to earn the win for the Patriots. Zander Kottka, Miller and Derek Dearth finished on the mound as the trio held Elwood scoreless the rest of the way.
The Patriots (14-6) entertain Knightstown on Monday.
