RICHMOND, Ind. – Richmond and Centerville are headed to the boys golf regional in southern Indiana after finishing in second and third during the sectional round at the Elks Country Club on Monday, June 5.
“It’s always good for the kids to be able to go and keep playing golf,” Richmond coach Brent Struewing said. “It’s a good experience.”
“I was proud of the kids,” Struewing continued. “You could see them going through their routines and trying as hard as they could.”
Connersville won the team title for the 2023 Richmond Sectional with a score of 319, while the host Red Devils were next at 337. Centerville and Union County finished in a dead heat for third at 356, but the Bulldogs move on thanks to the tie-breaking scores of the No. 5 golfers.
“This was one of the goals, make regionals,” Centerville’s Brady Moore said. “Coach (Aaron Roberts) preached to us from day one every shot counts and every score counts.”
“We see today that the five man really came in,” Moore added. “It came down to it. I’m proud of my teammates and I’m proud of my coach. Our chemistry is good.”
The other team scores were Hagerstown 358, Franklin County 363, Northeastern 367, Rushville 381, Lincoln 410 and Oldenburg Academy 451.
Thursday’s Providence Regional is at the Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville. The first tee time on June 8 is scheduled for 8 a.m.
In addition to host Providence, the other participating sectionals are Franklin, Greensburg and Madison.
Playoff for Medalist
Three Extra holes were needed to decide who would be the medalist for the event as Moore and Richmond’s Ryder Cate each carded a 75 for the first 18.
With the goal of qualifying for the regional already in the bag, Moore was a relaxed for the playoff.
“It took some pressure off and it was easier on me and it helped,” he said. “Me and Ryder are good buddies. We both played pretty good. The key for me was to just keep focused and take it one shot at a time.”
Moore eventually outlasted Cate as he nailed a putt on No. 3 to take the top individual spot. Watch here.
Connersville’s Will Chalker was third on the individual leaderboard with a 77. Chalker’s teammate Cooper Kinney and Ethan Werking of Hagerstown tied for fourth with a 78.
Werking led the three individual qualifiers for the regional as he will be joined by Gage Tipton of Union County and Hayden Chalfant of Northeastern. Tipton had an 81 with Chalfant finishing with 85.
