Editor’s note: The Reds Decade Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation that starts over with each best-of-three game series. If a real life starter is not in the rotation, he can be used in relief. Cincinnati squads that did not made the post-season are featured in this event as one team from each decade from the 1910s to the 1980s were selected.
Carl Mays tossed a three-hitter to lead the 1924 Cincinnati Reds to a 3-0 win over the 1964 Cincinnati Reds.
With the victory and sweep in the best of three series, the 1924 squad meets the 1948 team in the second round of the Reds Decade Tournament.
Mays (1-0), who fanned two, allowed a single to Frank Robinson in the fourth, a double to Pete Rose in the sixth and a pinch-hit single to Chico Ruiz in the eighth. The only other baserunner was Leo Cardenas, who reached on an error in the third.
Offensively, the 1924 squad picked up a solo homer by Curt Walker in the fourth off 1964 starter Jim Maloney.
In the seventh against Maloney, 1924 added two runs on a single by Jake Daubert.
Maloney (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he allowed 11 hits without a walk, while fanning 11. Sammy Ellis gave up two hits in the eighth, but didn’t allow a run.
