Editor’s note: The Reds Decade Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation that starts over with each best-of-three game series. If a real life starter is not in the rotation, he can be used in relief. Cincinnati squads that did not made the post-season are featured in this event as one team from each decade from the 1910s to the 1980s were selected.
Pete Donohue did everything as he led the 1924 Cincinnati Reds to the championship series of the Reds Decade Tournament.
Donohue tossed a six-hitter, while adding a double and a single at the plate in a 4-0 victory over the 1948 Cincinnati Reds as his squad claimed the second round best of three series 2-1 to move on to play the 1977 Cincinnati Reds in the finals.
The action began in the second inning as Bubbles Hargrave got the scoring underway with RBI double before Donohue smacked a two-run double to give his squad a 3-0 advantage against 1948 starter Ewell Blackell.
In the fourth, Donohue added a single off Blackwell as the 1924 team failed to score.
Hargrave’s run-scoring single in the fifth was the final tally as he collected his second of three hits in the affair.
Bobby Adams had half of the hits for the 1948 team as he singled in the first, third and eighth.
Donohue (1-0) had a pair of strikeouts and walked one in his complete game effort.
Blackwell (0-1) worked six innings allowing all four runs on a dozen hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Howie Fox pitched the final two frames giving up a hit, while fanning two.
Eppa Rixey (1-1) will get the start for the 1924 team in the opener of the championship series as the 1977 squad counters with Tom Seaver (2-0).
