Reds Tournament: 40 vs. 90

The 1940 team has won four games in a row as they have reached the finals of the Stat-O-Matic Reds Tournament presented by Press Room Pass.

With a 2-1 win over the 1990 squad in the opener, the 1940 team completed it second straight series sweep with a 5-3 victory.

Jimmy Ripple and Billy Myers both drove in a run against 1990 closer Rob Dibble in the ninth inning as 1940 punched its ticket to the championship series.

Frank McCormick put 1940 on top in the first inning with a RBI double off starter Norm Charlton, before 1990 rallied to take the lead in the second. Eric Davis homered and Mariano Duncan added a run-scoring single.

Ripple tied it in the third with a single, while Ival Goodman made it 3-2 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly for 1940.

In the bottom of the fourth, Paul O’Neill‘s RBI double for 1990 time the game to set the stage for the 1940 heroics in ninth inning.

Bucky Walters won his second consecutive contest for 1940 as he tossed a complete game scattering seven hits with five strikeouts.

Ernie Lombardi led 1940 with three hits after being a hero in the first game.

Game 1

Lombardi’s homer in the eighth inning off 1990 starter Jose Rijo proved to be the difference as 1940 picked up the victory.

Joe Oliver gave 1990 a 1-0 lead in the fourth until Lew Riggs tied it in the seventh with a pinch-hit single.

Jim Turner worked seven frames on the mound for 1940 giving up five hits and an unearned run with three strikeouts before being lifted for Riggs.

Joe Beggs held 1990 scoreless over the last two innings to earn the victory.

Rijo went eight innings as he surrendered eight hits and fanned eight.
