Reds Tournament: 70 vs. 75

The 1975 Reds swept their second straight series to advance to the finals of the Stat-O-Matic Reds Tournament presented by Press Room Pass.

Allowing just a run in each contest, 1975 posted a 2-1 win over 1970 followed by a 6-1 decision in the clincher.

In the opener, Fred Norman and Rawly Eastwick combined for a one-hitter in what turned out to be a come-from-behind victory for 1975.

Tony Perez, the 1970 version, gave his team a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a RBI ground out after a walk and an error put Lee May at third.

Ken Griffey doubled to tie the game in the sixth off 1970 starter Wayne Simpson, while Cesar Geronimo homered in the seventh for the winning run.

Norman gave up a single to Dave Concepcion in the seventh. Eastwick worked a perfect ninth to earn a save.

Simpson gave up just four hits with seven strikeouts in eight innings as he suffered the loss.

Game 2

Don Gullett would be the hero for the 1975 team as they got started early in the finale of the series.

Joe Morgan put 1975 on top in the bottom of the first with a solo homer off 1970 starter Gary Nolan.

One inning later, Concepcion doubled to knock in a run before Gullett drove in two more with a single.

Johnny Bench‘s two-run double in the seventh were the final runs for 1975.

Gullett gave up four hits in the contest as he tossed a complete game with May driving in the only run for 1970 with a homer in the fourth.
