FOUNTAIN CITY, Ind. – Shooting was the answer for the Union County boys basketball team on Monday night as the Patriots rallied to post 58-48 win over Lawrenceburg to advance to the championship of the Northeastern Tournament.
Union County (5-3) faces Class 2A Northeastern for the title on Tuesday night.
Lawrenceburg led 11-3 midway through the first quarter.
“They came out and punched us in the mouth,” Union County Head Coach Mark Detweiler said. “That’s a good ball club.”
“They came out with a little more energy and we were a little flat,” he continued. “Sometimes (shooting) is your answer, it gives you energy. Our defense picked up after that.”
Behind six 3-pointers from Logan Sanford, the Patriots responded to lead 26-11 when he nailed the last one at the 2:51 mark of the second period.
“It was a pretty phenominal run,” Detweiler said. “We made about everything.”
“We had 11 field goals in that stretch and 11 assists,” he continued. “The last couple of weeks, we’ve had a lot of nights like that where we had guys making the extra pass. Obviously, Logan got going and his teammates did a great job of finding him.”
Sanford would finish with a game-high 33 points with nine treys.
“We got some good inside out action,” Detweiler said. “Our ball movement was really good.”
Two of Sanford’s biggest shots came later. Union County was up 40-25 at the end of the third quarter when Sanford drilled a bomb to finish the frame. The Patriots would then start the final stanza with the ball.
“We talked about that in the huddle,” Detweiler said. “Now you’ve got the next possion lets do something with it.”
Sanford did. His 3-pointer tio begin the fourth quarter put the Patriots up 43-25 and they were able to hold off the Tigers (4-4) the rest of the way.
Dillon Miller added eight points for Union County, while Breyden Wicker grabbed 10 rebounds.
